Healing Communities, Building Futures
In early 2025, driven by a mission to expand outreach in East Africa, Upasuaji International Executive Director Lynsay Balumuka set out to research the feasibility of a short informational video on Down syndrome. What began as a modest vision evolved into a powerful documentary under the incredible direction of Maurice Kirya. Following the success of Now We Know, Upasuaji was awarded a grant to produce a follow-up series of films designed to reach and inspire an even broader audience. "NOW WE KNOW" is an award winning short documentary by Upasuaji International directed by Maurice Kirya. The film captures the lived experiences of Ugandan families raising children with Down syndrome, moving past cultural stigma toward a narrative of dignity and hope.
By weaving together personal stories of resilience with expert medical perspectives from Dr. Daniel Lukwiya, the documentary bridges the gap between traditional misconceptions and clinical reality. It serves as both an educational tool and a call to action, celebrating the power of community inclusion and the right of every child to receive life-saving medical care and social acceptance.
A Man Like Sam follows the inspiring journey of Samuel Mugabi, a Ugandan man with Down syndrome breaking barriers and exceeding expectations of the community around him. In a region where intellectual disabilities often lead to isolation, Sam’s path to independence highlights the power of opportunity and parental advocacy.
Told through Sam’s own voice alongside insights from his parents and Lynsay Balumuka and Diana Mutoni, the film is a look at resilience, family devotion, and the systemic fight for true inclusion in East Africa.
A Man Like Sam premieres August 27th, 2026 in Uganda
